Leukemia myeloid akut (AML) adalah jenis kanker darah yang terjadi karena produksi berlebihan dari jenis sel darah putih imatur tertentu (juga dikenal sebagai myeloblas) di sumsum tulang. Myeloblas berlebih ini menyebabkan kepadatan di sumsum tulang, menyisakan sedikit ruang untuk produksi sel darah sehat lainnya seperti sel darah merah dan trombosit.
Leukemia Myeloid Akut dapat terjadi karena kerusakan sel DNA di sumsum tulang. Ini dapat mempengaruhi produksi sel darah di sumsum tulang yang mengakibatkan produksi sel darah putih yang belum matang yang disebut myeloblast.
